DR. LEAH JAMIESON

Leah Jamieson received the S.B. degree in mathematics from M.I.T. and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Princeton University. Since 1976, she has been on the faculty at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, USA, where she is the Ransburg Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Associate Dean of Engineering for Undergraduate Education.

Dr. Jamieson is co-founder and Director of the Engineering Projects in Community Service – EPICS – Program at Purdue. EPICS engages multidisciplinary teams of undergraduates in solving engineering problems for community service and education organizations. Ten universities now have EPICS programs patterned after the program created at Purdue. With her EPICS co-founder, Dr. Jamieson has received the American Society for Engineering Education's 1997 Chester F. Carlson Award for Innovation in Engineering Education.

Dr. Jamieson's research interests include speech recognition and parallel processing. Her current work, in collaboration with colleagues, focuses on the integration of speech recognition and natural language processing systems. Her work in parallel processing has addressed issues in the design of scalable parallel libraries for image and speech processing applications. She has authored over 160 journal and conference papers and has co-edited books on Algorithmically Specialized Parallel Computers (Academic Press) and The Characteristics of Parallel Algorithms (M.I.T. Press).

Dr. Jamieson was the 2003 IEEE Vice-President for Technical Activities and was 1998-99 President of the IEEE Signal Processing Society. She has been an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing and the IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems . She has been an IEEE Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing Society Distinguished Lecturer and an IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Visitor. She currently chairs the IEEE Technical Activities Board New Technology Directions Committee.

Dr. Jamieson received the IEEE Education Society's Harriet B. Rigas “Outstanding Woman Engineering Educator” Award in 2000 and the National Science Foundation's Director's Award for Distinguished Teaching Scholars in 2001. She was named the 2002 Indiana Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation. Dr. Jamieson was the recipient of an IEEE Third Millennium Medal, an IEEE Computer Society Golden Core Award, and the IEEE Signal Processing Society Meritorious Service Award. She is a Fellow of the IEEE.
