MARY WARD-CALLAN

Mary Ward-Callan is the Managing Director of Technical Activities for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE). The IEEE is the world's largest technical professional association with more than 350,000 members in approximately 150 countries. Through its members, the Institute is a leading authority on areas ranging from aerospace, computers and telecommunications to biomedicine, electric power, and consumer electronics. Mary manages the technical activities of the Institute which includes society operations, product management for society publications and conferences, Committee support for the Technical Activities Board and the IEEE Society Executive Offices. The technical activities supported by the IEEE Societies and Councils include over 300 technical conferences offered worldwide, 118 technical publications, numerous symposium and technical training seminars, and a variety of other In addition, Mary manages the Institute-wide functions associated with Meetings, Conferences, and Travel operations. educational, member and student activities. IEEE sponsors over 300 Conferences and over 200 Board and Committee meetings, annually.

Prior to joining the IEEE, Mary was employed by Bellcore for 19 years where she worked in the areas of telecommunications and telecommunications business management. Mary worked on several then-new technologies such SONET, ATM, DLC, and SMDS. Mary's career included significant contributions in local loop design, network simulation, network operations and management, sub-network control, and product testing and certification. Mary also has had experience in business management, re-engineering, and project management. Mary's last assignment at Bellcore was as the Executive Director of Product Testing and Certification. In this role, she began an effort with the automotive industry to transfer their networks from Private virtual networks to the Internet.

Mary holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Vassar College

and a master's degree in electrical engineering from Princeton University. She is married with three children and lives in New Jersey, USA.
